News from Gary Alexander Racing Stables
Ration My Passion(NZ) was headed 300m out, but fought back and went on strongly under a top ride from apprentice Denis Schwarz, to shed her maiden tag over 2400m, at the Vaal on 13 November 2018. She is a progressive type and it should pay to follow her over marathon trips. Congratulations to owners Laurence & Jaryd Wernars, Anthony Joannides, Greg Sadie, Bruce & Jo Gardner. Ration My Passion(NZ) was bred by Cambridge Stud.
Odd Rob was in good form at Turffontein on 18 October 2018, he easily accounted for competitive field over 2600m, to record his sixth victory. Apprentice Denis Schwarz rode a copy book race and had it won half way up the straight. Congratulations to owners Mrs M Jeffery & Mr S Jeffery. Odd Rob was bred by Bosworth Farm Stud.
Under a good tactical ride by up and coming apprentice Denis Schwarz. Brand New Cadillac kept finding after leading from the start, to hold off the challenges and score an impressive victory at the Vaal on 30 August 2018 over 2400m. This was Brand New Cadillac’s second win and he is maturing into a decent stayer. Congratulations to owners; Adrian Giuricich, Pravin Chetty, Bruce Gardner, Gerald Kalil, Grant Knowles, Darren Simpson, Brian Seggar & Julie Alexander. Brand New Cadillac was bred by Summerhill stud!
It was all against Zeal & Zest!... this race over 2000m was run at such a sedate pace on Vaal inside track, that the field literally cantered and sprinted. This is not ideal for horses with stamina, but under a good ride from Sherman Brown who deputised for Mark Khan who was booked off ill, Brown got Zeal & Zest out early in the straight and got him going, this was the major factor that won him the race. Zeal & Zest is coming back to his best and it should pay to follow him in the new season. Congratulations to owners; Pravin Chetty, Sunil Mungaroo, Adrian Giuricich, Darren Simpson, Brian Seggar & Gary Alexander. Zeal & Zest was bred by Summerhill Stud.
Top Shot won his seventh race at Turffontein Racecourse on Saturday 14 July 2018 over 2000m and the manner in which he won suggests that he still has more wins in the tank. Apprentice Denis Schwarz did duty for Mark Khan who was sidelined because of a suspension. Congratulations to owners; Jo & Bruce Gardner, Greg Sadie & Mark Khan. Top Shot was a fifty thousand rand purchase and was bred by Summerhill Stud.
Saragon won a competitive Pinnacle plate for Fillies and Mares in style over 1600m on July day at Turffontein Racecourse. Competently ridden by up and coming apprentice Denis Schwarz, he had Saragon well placed throughout the race and produced her at the right time to win going away. Congratulations to winning owners Ashleigh Venter and Simon & Michelle Jeffery.
The nominees for Champion Stayer for the 2018 Racing Association award were , Fortissima, Just Cruised In, Let it Rain, Secret Potion & Hero’s Honour. In a hotly contested category the vote went to Hero’s Honour. The stable is delighted for owners Laurence & Jaryd Wernars, Greg Sadie, Bruce & Joanne Gardner. It is wonderful to pick up another Racing Association award, especially with this young horse who should continue to improve as he matures. Hero’s Honour was also nominated for Champion 3 year old but the vote went to the well deserved Monks Hood. Hero’s Honour was bred by Summerhill Stud who also bred Champion three year old filly Takingthepeace, whose dam Lisa Anne was trained by Gary Alexander.
Top workrider Joe Gwingwizha made his move at the right time on Brand New Cadillac, in the maiden 2450m at Turffontein on Saturday, 12 May 2018. Brand New Cadillac raced from off the pace and Joe moved him up early on the bend to get him into contention early in the straight. BNC produced a sustained run to beat his stable mate Imoto, who ran on late. BNC stays well and should win again over similar distances during the off season on the Highveld. Congratulations to owners: A Giuricich; B Seggar; P Chetty, G Kalil; G Knowles; D Simpson; B Gardner & Miss J Alexander. Brand New Cadillac was bred by Summerhill Stud.
Hero’s Honour stayed on well to win the South African Derby (GR 1) under a top ride by former Champion Jockey Mark Khan, at Turffontein Racecourse on 05 May 2018. Hero’s Honour made it three South African Derby’s for the Stable, the first was Silver Sliver in 2000, followed by Timber Trader(NZ) in 2002. Timber Trader(NZ) was also ridden by Mark Khan. Congratulations to owners Messrs J & L Wernars, B Gardner, G Sadie & Mrs J Gardner. Hero’s Honour was bred by Summerhill Sud!
Jockey Chase Maujean had Saragon well placed and when he asked her for an effort about 450m out, she quickened well to win going away at Turffontein Racecourse, in a 1600FM handicap on Saturday 28 April 2018. Saragon is on the up and it should be worth following this daughter of Ideal World(USA) in the future. Congratulations to owners: Ashleigh Venter & Michelle & Simon Jeffery.
